As a wine writer, I can see that there are some reviewers out there who are indeed charging money for an "enhanced" review and that needs to stop.

But I'm a chronic non-joiner as well and I don't feel the need to have to declare my independence. If wineries send me wines, they know that if I don't write about them, I didn't think much of them.

If I get any feedback from the publications I write for that I am suddenly deemed a "dirty" reviewer, the first contact WWNZ will be getting from me will be through a firm of solicitors.Bearhunterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06927373498537533968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442430064359197279.post-66577590518332493462011-09-02T16:38:28.717+12:002011-09-02T16:38:28.717+12:00Just to add on the end of that -

Ther...Karl, I hear every word you have writ here. There are few quibbles even but I do want to chip in on the following –

I would have agreed whole-heartedly with “overseas jaunts by travel writers” instead of “overseas jaunts by motoring writers”. To be fair, I must add that the likes of Jim Eagles and his crew at Herald always state whether the “travel” being reviewed was provided and by whom.

That leads in to the second part of the debate.

I look at “public critique” from the point of view that the very first and most important factor is the critic. Whether it is wine, travel, or the latest flick at the local flea-house – it does not take long to determine whether the critic’s taste is a good guide or not to one’s own enjoyment. There is one very well-known wine critic (just to follow your point a bit further) who I just do not bother to read – simply because he reviews wines which I could buy four bottles of my personal taste for the price of one of his choice.

So, as a consumer of the punditry of critics from a wide range of “products” from amatory to zealotry, I think that you bother yourself too much about the detail. If there are people out there who go and buy the latest in i-Pads simply because some paid critic has recommended the product, they are probably the same people who would vote for Act because the Jonkey told them to.

Let the reader be(a)ware (I am sure that "caveat emptor" has been mis-interpreted).The probligohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17882103150181414348noreply@blogger.com
