I also listened with great interest to Kathryn Ryan's interview with her this morning - and was very impressed by her sensible appearance and conversation. I agree it would have been good to know which candidates were turned down - and why. I will stick my neck out and presume that Kiro was appointed precisely because she must have reassured Ardern that she would NOT advocate full partnership with Maori in the governing of New Zealand. Kiro is a sensible academic. We simply cannot have both a democracy and a partnership with a sovereign partner at the same time. Labour is in a cleft stick here. On one hand they dare not openly disagree with the newfangled interpretation of The Treaty - and on the other they know very well that it is a constitutional nonsense.

She said she would be "very active" in various social spheres. Good on her. That's just fine. But let us hope she stays out of politics as she promised. Let us give her the benefit of the doubt.
Andy Espersenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18391974844284751975noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442430064359197279.post-86280841127551154282021-05-25T16:21:58.321+12:002021-05-25T16:21:58.321+12:00Here's what Christine Rankin, the former Head ...Here's what Christine Rankin, the former Head of MSD, had to say about Kiro on Magic Talk today: "I believe Dr Kiro lacked any depth of understanding of her role [as children's commissioner]. She was there to advocate and protect New Zealand children and do something real about our appalling statistics. The reality was she spent most of her time overseas, and she was an apologist for the people who committed appalling crimes against New Zealand children, and that frustrated me enormously."

Other than that she is called "Cindy", which is obviously a plus.Trev1https://www.blogger.com/profile/00271717267778957672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442430064359197279.post-84567106046930681622021-05-25T12:30:44.673+12:002021-05-25T12:30:44.673+12:00I tend to agree with you that she should probably ...I tend to agree with you that she should probably be given a chance. She speaks well enough and seems reasonably intelligent.

The reality is that the chances of her having to make any constitutional decisions is pretty remote. The job is pretty much for show only.

Hopefully she is smart enough to understand the role and know that if she becomes political then the chances of another Maori getting the job anytime soon will just get harder.Russell Parkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01998289720002196469noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8442430064359197279.post-65661129231082996272021-05-25T12:00:28.687+12:002021-05-25T12:00:28.687+12:00Considering the constant bombardment from our lead...Considering the constant bombardment from our leaders, media and folk like Waititi on how Maori has been broken and downtrodden by the colonial masters how can this be an appointment that garners any praise. It would be hard to find a more colonial position as Governor General. That our woke media etc can now turn around and praise this appointment is yet another example of the straight faced hypocrisy that appears normal in our society.

Not that I mind the appointment, it is a fairly ceremonial position these days. Of course it is unlikely to survive He Puapua. CXHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07716356211635024878noreply@blogger.com
