RNZ made the right decision

Mani Dunlop finished up last week after 12 years at RNZ.

The state broadcaster published a tribute to the Midday Report presenter but didn’t go into the circumstances of her departure.

For that, you had to read a report of Dunlop's last broadcast in the New Zealand Herald, in which she made it clear that she quit after being passed over for “the top job” – an obvious reference to the co-presenter’s chair on RNZ’s flagship programme, Morning Report. "When you don't get the top job," she's quoted as saying, "it's time to go elsewhere."

I speculated on this blog in December that Dunlop was a prime contender for the Morning Report position after Susie Ferguson quit mid-year. I acknowledged that Dunlop ticked a lot of boxes (capable, young-ish and Maori) but I also said it would be wrong to appoint her.

That’s because she’s the fiancĂ©e of a cabinet minister, Kiri Allan. Even if Dunlop bent over backwards to be fair and neutral as a presenter and interviewer, the programme’s credibility would be compromised by the public knowledge that she was the partner of a senior government politician, especially in an election year.

In the event, RNZ surprised everyone by making an appointment from outside the organisation: former TV journalist Ingrid Hipkiss. She’s expected to join Corin Dann on the show this month.

We don’t know whether Dunlop was passed over because of her relationship with Allan, but I think RNZ made the right decision. To appoint her would have been provocative, at the very least.

Suspicion of mainstream media bias is rampant enough already. Trust in RNZ, which as a publicly owned broadcaster has a special obligation to be even-handed, would have been further undermined.

There was a hint of bitterness in Dunlop’s parting remarks to the Herald and a cryptic reference to haters. “To the haters, and there’s plenty of them, come on the journey,” Dunlop is quoted as saying. Who the supposed haters are wasn’t explained.

Dunlop said she had no idea what she would do next and would be taking her time to decide.

Correction: The original version of this post said Dunlop made her comments in an interview with the New Zealand Herald. In fact she made them on air and was reported in the Herald.

Like most of the lefties on RNZ and elsewhere I hope her next job is out of my hearing.

No doubt in my mind who the 'haters' are Karl...the likes of you & me. She's being hyperbolic of course but that's their game. It's one of the reasons I switched to Concert...they don't sound like they 'hate' me & I can't discern their politics...the music enriches me too.
(Highly recommend their newish early morning presenter with the unpronounceable Samoan name, Sani for short...erudite & serene, a delight.)
I mean, it should be writ in their manual...no spouses of govt. We read Jane Clifton with a grain of salt for obvious reasons.
And they're STILL calling Parker anti-trans.
LOVING this Chippy moment...lawdy, lawdy, lawdy MISS Clawdy...priceless.

Everyone knows who the "haters" are except it seems you Karl.

For your edification they are ..... anyone who disagrees what the accuser is currently thinking. The problem is that their "thinking" changes on a daily basis it would seem, for example ..

Lesbians good now bad if they won't have sex with men claiming to be women.

"Tomorrow's Schools" good now bad because ..... nobody is quite sure yet but it's definitely bad ...

Kiri Allan is the “partner” of Mani Dunlop. Seems the same Kiri Allan, Minister of Justice in the Labour cabinet, has apologised over her criticising Radio NZ for not appointing Mani Dunlop to the Morning Report job.

Not sure how much value we should place on the apology. The original words are out there now, on the record, and cannot be expunged. This seems to be the apology season – think of Stuart Nash et al. Not so many years ago David Cunliffe, when leader of the opposition (Labour), stupidly apologised for being a man. Ridiculous. Should Kiri Allan apologise for not being a man?

I suppose that there are people who care but I could not care less. I cannot recall the last time I listened to or watched any local news broadcast (I object to being told "what to think"). I subscribe to a number of overseas journals, listen extensively to overseas media broadcasts and occasionally look at a local rag for 'parish pump news'. The whereabouts of Ms Dunlop and the fortunes of Morning Report, hold no interest for me.

And I suppose all this makes me a 'hater'.

PS: why do I have to prove that I am not a robot each time?
